Translators all over the world work tirelessly on projects in various language combinations every day. But what recognition is out there for exceptional translators?
In this blog we take a look at the awards available for different genres of translation.
TA First Translation Prize
This award is specific to literary translation and is a £2,000 prize for a debut translation, to be shared between the author and the translator. It must be the linguist’s first published translated works. The winner of this year’s awards will be announced on 1st March at the British Library.
FIT Prize for Excellence in Scientific and Technical Translation
Awarded by the Fédération Internationale des Traducteurs/International Federation of Translators, this award celebrates the contributions made by scientific translators. You can nominate yourself or another translator by completing their form online. The FITI also awards the “Karel Čapek Medal for Translation from a Language of Limited Diffusion”, which celebrates the translation of literary work from a rare language. This is to raise awareness of the language and highlight the work translators do bridging the culture gap. The awards are held at the FIT World Congress, with the next congress in 2020 in Varadero, Cuba.
PEN Translation Prize
This competition has been running since 1963 and celebrates an excellent literary translation into English, with a $3,000 prize. The next winner will be announced in Autumn 2019.
The Oxford-Weidenfeld Prize
This prize celebrates the significance of culture in translation and is awarded for the best book-length literary translation into English from any European language.
The winner will be announced on Saturday 15th June 2019, with a prize of £2,000 to be shared between the author and the translator.
The Warwick Prize for Women in Translation
This prize is awarded for the translation of any fiction or non-fiction novel, poem or play written by a female author.
The prize is £1,000 to be shared equally between the author and the translator. The next awards will be held on 20th November 2019.
