Speaking a second language can contribute to the overall functioning of the brain in several ways.
In this blog we look at a few of the ways in which our brain is boosted by knowledge of a second language.
MEMORY AND CONCENTRATION
It has been shown that speakers of multiple languages have advanced memory skills and are able to focus better than speakers of one language. This may be due to the fact that they are required to learn numerous rules and absorb large amounts of vocabulary when learning a second language, leading to an increased ability to retain information.
Polyglots are also likely to have a higher level of intelligence.
BETTER AT DECISION-MAKING
Bilinguals are also able to make decisions more effectively, filter out useless information and focus solely on relevant information. They are also prone to being more analytical and are more aware of their surroundings.

INCREASED COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Polyglots benefit from an expanded vocabulary, a deep understanding and sensitivity to their native language as well as an increased attention to detail. This includes a thorough knowledge of the grammar and syntax of their mother tongue. As well as this, they are often more confident in communicative situations with excellent negotiating skills. Learning a second language also improves listening and writing skills.
WORK OUT FOR YOUR BRAIN
Language learning and usage trains your brain and keeps it active. It has been shown that learning a second language delays and/or decreases the chance of developing a brain disease such as Alzheimer’s or Dementia.
